Remote Waterfalls to the Collins Inlet

Updated: Apr 11, 2023

We ended up travelling four days in a row, essentially racing through the Thirty Thousand Islands, due to a forecast for high winds. Generally, we like to have at least one day of rest in between, but sometimes the weather plans your travel for you. There are other limiting factors too, such as food, water, and the "poop tank".

After a great stay in Three Finger Bay, we travelled through the small craft route and Georgian Bay. Our first stop was at the end of the Shawanaga River, which was a very worthwhile stop. This is a very remote anchorage that we wouldn't enter unless we had the details that we had as members of the Great Lakes Cruising Club. It was a little scary coming in but well worth it. Thanks to our friends on Good Idea for the recommendation and the company. There was a trickle of a waterfall behind our boat and a more substantial one just a short dinghy ride away. We would have stayed here for days, but we would have been trapped by the winds and we would have run out of water so we plotted a course to Britt in the Byng Inlet to get supplies and find a secure haven further north.

We stayed at Wright's Marina in Britt where we got a our choice of either a free pump out or $20 off dockage for AGLCA loopers. We took the dinghy to St Amant's Waterfront Inn & Marina to the general store and LCBO for supplies. We also scrubbed down the boat and did some laundry. The other boaters in the marina were very friendly and Luc and Sylvie shared their looping experiences from 2017-18 with us. A highlight included a treat from an ice cream shop called "Ice Cream on the Rocks".

On Saturday, we left for the Collins Inlet where we intended to ride out the winds that were expected on Sunday. A trip through the Collins Inlet is something to be enjoyed with lots of beautiful scenery, and the occasional loon. We ended up on the hook in Mill Lake between two other looper boats, Serenity II and Will 'n Joy. We had a brief hello with expectations of later visits, but we had no cell coverage. Since the winds were coming later on Sunday and expected to continue until Tuesday or Wednesday, we had to haul anchor and go on Sunday morning to get Cam signal so he could work. Yes, cell coverage is another limiting factor when one of your crew is working remotely. So, we were off to Killarney and Covered Portage Cove and we hope to cross paths again soon with our fellow looper boats.
